Homeopathy: naturally effective healing.

What is the homeopathic approach to disease?

Of foremost importance to the homeopath is how the patient perceives the disease. A good homeopathic consultation would be impossible if the homeopath would approach the patient from the point of view of some kind of theory or faith. The patient’s description of the disease is true from his or her point a view even though she might or might not be aware of its non-conformance with the general experience. For example: A patient might suffer frequently from similar hallucinations. Her mother describes the ridiculous things she comes out with during episodes of high fever. The homeopath wouldn’t consider contents of the hallucinations to be ridiculous and irrelevant. The contents could actually be decisive in finding the right remedy. The value of symptoms is true with respect to the patient. The patient describes the disease in her own individual way; explains the disease in her personal context; a context that is shaped by her own personal history. So, during a consultation, beside the main complaints, automatically other issues, like the history of disease, food cravings and aversions, marriage, etc. will come up. The homeopath encourages the patient to talk in a personal way about her symptoms by asking specific individualising questions. The homeopathic consultations are of a holistic nature because of this person centred approach. The homeopath essentially treats the disease as it is perceived by the patient.

What happens during a consultation?

Consultations take on the average about one hour, but usually the first consultation takes a bit longer. During consultations the main complaints will be discussed. Other issues such as family life, relationships, work or study might be dealt with as well. You can expect to be asked about sleep patterns, cravings and dislikes, health problems in your family, briefly all questions that are typical of your personality. In this way the homeopath attempts to grasp a totality and to come to the essence of the current situation in the person’s life. Sometimes a remedy is given immediately after the consultation, but in general the information has to be analysed and you will receive the remedy in the post a few days later. People who live near enough to the clinic also have the option to collect the remedy themselves.

How does homeopathy work?

All living creatures have the ability to heal themselves. A wound on the knee usually heals automatically. The flu usually comes and goes without any intervention. But in many cases our body is not able to tackle the problem itself. Homeopathy stimulates our own healing capacity. The homeopathic remedy merely stimulates the body’s own healing process so that it can recover of its own accord.

How to make an appointment?

The best way to get in direct contact is to call on working days between 5 pm. and 6 pm. If that does not suit or if it is an urgent matter you can call the mobile phone. Usually appointments for a follow-up are made after the consultation.

What are homeopathic remedies made from?

Homeopathic remedies are very safe. Homeopathic remedies are not chemically produced. Not only plants, but also other materials, like minerals and animal substances, are applied for the production of homeopathic remedies.

How are homeopathic remedies made?

First a crude substance that is derived from plants, minerals, etcetera is made soluble. After that the substance is diluted on a rhythmic scale. Homeopaths call this rhythmic dilution process potentisation. There are several methods and scales applied for potentisation. We predominantly use the D-scale which is 1:10, the C-scale which is 1:100 or the LM-scale which is 1:50,000. Remedies potentised on the scale 1:100 for example, the C-potencies, are made as follows. One unit of the soluble crude substance is added to ninety nine units of water. Some alcohol is added to the water as a preservative. This is shaken a hundred times firmly. Next, one unit of this solution is taken out and added to another ninety nine units of water. And again this is shaken a hundred times firmly. Approximately at the C12 or D30 the probability of finding an atom or molecule in the solution is near nil. This is the moment when the number of Avogadro is exceeded. In 1776 Chemist Count Amadeo Avogadro determined that the relative atomic mass of any element, expressed in grams, contains 6.022045x10^23 atoms. Homeopaths mostly make use of the potencies C30, C200, C1000 which is also called potency 1M, and far beyond. The higher the potency of a homeopathic remedy the profounder its curative action. Simple observations can confirm the healing effect of high potencies on living organisms. Highly potentised remedies have a curative effect on infants and animals. When treating infants or animals the effect of suggestibility can be ruled out.

How does a homeopathic remedy have effect on the human body?

Most homeopathic remedies are potentised to that extend that there are no molecules or atoms of the original substance to be found. The mechanism behind the healing properties of a homeopathic remedy is not of a material nature. A Homeopathic remedy only can have effect on that part of our recovery system that is not of a material nature either. The founder of Homeopathy Samuel Hahnemann called this spiritual force within the human organism the dynamis. The dynamis is the spiritual force that gives our body shape. It let all bodily processes work in a harmonious way. It keeps us alive. When death occurs the dynamis withdraws from the physical body and the decay is immanent.

Is homeopathy a safe medicine?

Yes, homeopathy is a safe medicine for the following reasons:

  • All homeopathic remedies are diluted on a rhythmic scale. This process is called potentization. This subject is described under the heading “How are homeopathic remedies made?” Now, all homeopathic remedies are potentised to such extend that the properties of the original substance have been completely replaced by healing qualities.
  • Homeopathic remedies are only tested on healthy human beings. During the experiments healthy volunteers take a remedy that they do not know. The volunteer develops temporarily symptoms. After a while the symptoms will subside of their own accord.
  • Homeopathic remedies are not chemically engineered, but are derived from complete parts of plants, animals, minerals, etc.
  • Jeroen Holtkamp is registered with the Irish Society of Homeopaths. The society promotes the highest standards of practice in Homeopathy. Members have contracted to abide by the ISH Codes of Ethics and Practice, which exist for the protection of the public and practitioner alike. The Code of Ethics and Practice serve as a guide for practicing members.

How quick does a homeopathic remedy have its healing effect?

A prognosis only can be made after a consultation. The speed of progression of recovery after taking a homeopathic remedy entirely depends of the state of health of the individual. A few factors can be discerned:

  • As a rough guideline one can state that the more acute and severe the suffering, the quicker the homeopathic remedy can work.
  • In general acute disease like sudden headaches, childhood illnesses, ailments after injuries, etc. are cured faster than chronic disease.
  • If the chronic ailment is accompanied by other, perhaps more serious complaints the healing might take longer.
  • If the patient is a young healthy person who has never been sick before but suddenly suffers from backaches, recovery can be very quick. If, at the other hand, the patient is aged and confined to the bed for years, recovery might progress at a slower rate.

What are health and disease with respect to homeopathy?

One can discern two types of causation of disease. The secondary causation which comes from our environment is well known to all of us, namely via viruses, bacteria and physical trauma’s. The primary causation comes from within and is the main focus of homeopathy. Life has a purpose so health and disease must have a purpose too. We are continuously in an effort to develop mentally, emotionally and physically in a balanced way. Sometimes our development goes at cost of organs and/or organ systems. If this imbalance can be overcome by our organism we usually call it an acute ailment. If the growth process is stagnated with an ongoing discomfort we usually deal with it as chronic disease. The homeopath acknowledges that disease is not something to just get rid off, but perceives it as signs and symptoms of a development that needs to be regulated in a safe and mild manner. Only for the sake of illustrating this, a clear example of a hypothetical case will be given. A dignified and serious natured person seeks help for migraine attacks and depression. After a while during the consultation she realises that the migraine attacks started shortly after the death of her father. She craves salt. The migraine attacks and depression have such an impact in her live that it keeps her from doing the things that really wants to do. For the homeopath this would be a clear case of stagnated bereavement. The prescribed remedy would give this individual an impulse to round off her bereavement. Temporarily she could experience an intensified bereavement process and after that the symptoms will clear up. Her depression and the migraine attacks will gradually or suddenly disappear. In this homeopathic case we see how apparently isolated symptoms are linked up on a deeper level. The human organism intensifies its development in bereavement after which further healing can take place. So, disease is primarily an abnormal state of growth; an opportunity to really get better! In severe cases of abnormal states of growth like cancer, the possibility to turn this development for the better is decreased considerably. In terminal cases the development towards death can not be stopped, but palliative, mental and emotional care can still be provided.
